Every purchase decision is an important piece of the puzzle and has an impact on our environment. That’s why with Ursus® [OE] we offer an absolutely environmentally friendly complete range for the upcoming generation – from exercise books to college pads. It perfectly combines a trendy retro look with environmental protection at the highest level.
We look after our machines, because nothing runs here without them. To extend the service life of our equipment while reducing energy consumption, we employ a dedicated maintenance team. Our machine operators are trained to carry out repairs and servicing themselves, and the staff of our in-house metal workshop can step in at any time. Maintaining our equipment plays an important role here: the longer a machine stays in operation, the less energy and material we use over its life cycle. Regular servicing and modern diagnostic technology keep our processes efficient and our consumption low.
We believe that awareness can make a real difference. Raising awareness of a considered use of resources and of thoughtful purchasing decisions is therefore a central concern of our company culture. We continuously inform both our employees and our customers about the importance of protecting the environment. This starts with internal communication and extends to messages, environmental tips and information across all our communication channels, in print and online. Our products themselves are one of our most important surfaces for this topic.

We are firmly committed to energy efficiency. Our efforts extend from our production facilities and our vehicle fleet through to building technology. Our focus is on using renewable energy sources to reduce our energy consumption from fossil fuels.
We are committed to handling waste responsibly. The most effective approach is to avoid waste in the first place – and that is exactly what we work on. For waste that cannot be avoided, we use effective recycling methods so that materials are returned to the production cycle.
We know that the quality of our products is directly linked to the origin of their raw materials. That is why we focus on responsible sourcing that meets high quality standards while taking the environment and our social responsibility into account. In this, we benefit from long-standing cooperation with certified suppliers who share our values.
We are aware that efficient production processes are crucial for protecting the environment. That is why we place great emphasis on continuously optimising our processes in order to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials.
Energy plays a central role in our lives – including for us as an industrial manufacturer. Without energy, all our machines would come to a standstill. Where this energy comes from matters a great deal to us: on the one hand, we draw electricity directly from our photovoltaic system; on the other, we rely on purchased electricity from hydropower. In this way, we make deliberate choices about our energy sources.
We endeavour to keep our carbon dioxide footprint as small as possible: In recent years, we have laid the foundations for a company that is as climate-friendly as possible with a comprehensive energy efficiency project. The conscious choice of our energy sources is essential here. We offset the unavoidable amount of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere by supporting global climate protection projects.
The certification by Climate Partner confirms that these efforts are bearing fruit: it shows that the Format Werk & Staufen Group not only reduces its own emissions, but also fulfils all the requirements of a modern, climate-friendly company in terms of offsetting.
The power of the sun as an inexhaustible energy source has occupied us for several years. Thanks to continuous investment in expanding the photovoltaic system on our company building, we now generate 45% of our electricity needs ourselves.
This lowers our operating costs and at the same time reduces the electricity we draw from fossil sources. With every ray of sunshine that hits our panels, we move a step closer to this goal.

Unsere Lehrlinge werden umsichtig durch ihre Lehrzeit begleitet – dafür haben wir ein Patenprogramm entwickelt: Ehemalige Lehrlinge stehen als Ansprech- und Vertrauensperson zur Verfügung.
Fortbildungen stehen an der Tagesordnung, das Kennenlernen des gesamten Betriebs und aller relevanten Abteilung ist hier selbstverständlich.
Jeder Lehrling in der Produktion verfügt über eine eigene Werkbank.

Social projects are a particular concern for us. Together with our cooperation partners, we support equal opportunities and access to education. We are especially committed to children and young people, because social inequality often affects them the most. In 2022, for example, we launched a donation campaign for Ukrainian schoolchildren in Austria, providing them with a total of 35,000 school exercise books.
Honesty and transparency are fundamental values in our company. In addition to binding legal principles, we also expect ethically impeccable behaviour in order to ensure smooth cooperation – both internally and with customers and service providers. Recycled paper is no longer coarse or grey. With a high level of whiteness and a pleasant feel, our recycled paper is in no way inferior in quality to paper made from virgin fibre. Every school notebook, every college pad and all our other products made from recycled paper offer a fine texture and a comfortable writing experience. In this way, we combine high product quality with the consistent use of recycled paper.
To reduce the environmental impact of our production, we keep products and materials in a closed loop wherever possible. This means we reuse and recycle resources to minimise the need for new raw materials and to reduce waste. In this way, we are closing the loop for paper products step by step.
